माना जा रहा है कि मोटरसाइकिल बस के नीचे फँस गई थी, जिससे चिंगारियाँ निकलीं और ईंधन टैंक में विस्फोट हो गया। यात्री गहरी नींद में थे और बाहर निकलने का समय नहीं मिल पाया। कुछ लोगों ने खिड़कियाँ तोड़कर जान बचाई, लेकिन कई लोग बाहर नहीं निकल सके।
आँखोंदेखे गवाहों ने बताया कि आग इतनी तेज थी कि लोग मदद के लिए चिल्ला रहे थे, गाँववाले पानी की बाल्टियाँ लेकर दौड़े, लेकिन तब तक बहुत देर हो चुकी थी। जब तक दमकल की गाड़ियाँ पहुँचीं, बस पूरी तरह आग की लपटों में घिर चुकी थी।
